In the summer of 2025, Aspen's cultural landscape was transformed by the inaugural AIR (Aspen Interdisciplinary Residency) Festival, a groundbreaking initiative by the Aspen Art Museum. Held from July 29 to August 1, 2025, AIR 2025: Life As No One Knows It brought together artists, scientists, technologists, and cultural leaders to explore the intersections of art, technology, and consciousness.
AIR is a decade-long program by the Aspen Art Museum designed to address contemporary challenges through interdisciplinary collaborations. The 2025 edition, Life As No One Knows It, was inspired by physicist Sara Imari Walker’s exploration of alternative definitions of life. The festival featured a closed-door retreat followed by a public program of performances, dialogues, and site-specific artworks.
Matthew Barney: Premiered TACTICAL Parallax, a large-scale performance blending elements from his previous works SECONDARY and Redoubt, exploring themes of violence and American culture.
Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Rafiq Bhatia: Presented On Blue, an electro-acoustic film performance in collaboration with the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, delving into dreams, memory, and the subconscious.
Jota Mombaça: Delivered a three-act opera at the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies, forging new connections between the body, sound, and the landscape.
Sophia Al-Maria and Davia Spain: Collaborated on a performance that combined elements of séance, song-cycle, and science-fictional lament.
Paul Chan: Engaged in a conversation with "Paul′", an AI-generated version of himself, exploring themes of the false self and synthetic consciousness.
The festival featured dialogues between artists and experts across various fields, including:
Zoë Hitzig and Anil Seth: Discussed the evolving concept of consciousness in relation to artificial general intelligence.
Álvaro Enrigue and Adrián Villar Rojas: Explored how speculative fiction reshapes our understanding of history, time, and consciousness.
Frida Escobedo and José Esparza Chong Cuy: Imagined an affective approach to designing museum architecture.
Glenn Ligon and Thelma Golden: Discussed the profound role of friendship and collaboration in shaping artistic practice.
The keynote lectures featured prominent figures such as:
Francis Kéré: Explored concepts of togetherness and the social and cultural value of public spaces.
Maya Lin: Reflected on the connection between landscape and memory through the lens of her large-scale environmental artworks.
AIR 2025 marked a significant step in Aspen's commitment to fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and artistic innovation. By bringing together diverse thinkers and creators, the festival not only celebrated the role of art in addressing contemporary challenges but also set the stage for future editions of AIR, continuing to explore the evolving relationship between art, technology, and society.
While details for AIR 2026 have yet to be announced, the success of the inaugural festival suggests that future editions will continue to push the boundaries of artistic and intellectual exploration. For updates and information on upcoming AIR programming, visit the official AIR website.
AIR 2025 was a testament to Aspen's enduring legacy as a hub for cultural innovation and a beacon for those seeking to engage with the pressing questions of our time through the lens of art
