$100 Million Renovation Revives Aspen’s Historic Mountain Chalet | Avant Garde Aspen Luxury Real Estate

A transformative project is underway in downtown Aspen, where the iconic Mountain Chalet is undergoing a $100 million renovation. This redevelopment aims to blend the lodge's storied past with modern luxury, preserving its European alpine charm while introducing contemporary amenities.

A Legacy Reimagined

Established in 1954 by the Melville family after a trip to Garmisch, Germany, the Mountain Chalet stands as Aspen’s oldest owner-built lodge. Over its 70-year history, it has been a cherished part of the community. Now, under the stewardship of McGuire Moorman Lambert Hospitality (MML) and Kupperman Companies, the lodge is set to reopen as the Aspen Mountain Chalet in the summer of 2027.

What’s Changing

The renovation encompasses a complete teardown and replacement of the east wing, modernization of electrical and plumbing systems, and enhancements to guest rooms and balconies. A larger hot tub will be installed, and two public restaurants will be introduced. The spa area will also be revamped to offer a more luxurious experience. While some exterior design changes are planned, the goal is to maintain the lodge's historic European-style aesthetic throughout the property.

Design and Construction

The design team includes Lake Flato and Lambert McGuire Design, with Rybak Architecture serving as the architect of record. PCL Construction, headquartered in Denver, is the general contractor overseeing the project. The development team, led by Zach Kupperman and Larry McGuire, aims to honor the property's legacy while elevating it to a new standard of American luxury adventure travel.

Community and Cultural Impact

The renovation is not just about upgrading a building; it's about preserving a piece of Aspen's history. The Melville family's involvement in the project underscores the commitment to maintaining the lodge's original spirit. Once reopened, the Aspen Mountain Chalet will offer 59 rooms, providing guests with a blend of European ethos and modern Aspen sensibility.

Looking Ahead

With construction underway, the community eagerly anticipates the grand reopening in 2027. The Aspen Mountain Chalet promises to be a destination that honors the past while embracing the future, offering a unique experience in the heart of downtown Aspen.
