Aspen Skiing Company is proposing a significant upgrade to Aspen Mountain's lift infrastructure with the introduction of the "Nell Bell" high-speed quad chairlift. This new lift aims to replace the aging Little Nell and Bell Mountain chairlifts, enhancing skier experience and operational efficiency.
The proposed Nell Bell chairlift would span approximately 8,300 feet, with around 465 feet crossing U.S. Forest Service land and the remainder on SkiCo property. Designed to transport up to 1,800 passengers per hour, it would significantly reduce wait times and improve skier circulation. The lift line would run parallel to the Silver Queen Gondola, featuring new towers and foundations to support the modern infrastructure.
The Bell Mountain chairlift, operational since 1957, and the Little Nell chairlift, installed in 1986, have served Aspen Mountain for decades. While both lifts have been upgraded over the years, they are nearing the end of their operational lifespan. The proposed Nell Bell lift would streamline access to popular slopes and ease congestion, particularly during peak times.
Aspen Skiing Company plans to begin construction of the Nell Bell lift in the summer of 2026, pending necessary approvals. The project requires an amendment to the Aspen Mountain Master Development Plan and must undergo an environmental review by the White River National Forest. Public comments are being accepted as part of the review process, with a decision expected in early 2026.
The Nell Bell chairlift represents a forward-thinking approach to preserving Aspen Mountain's legacy while enhancing the guest experience. By replacing outdated infrastructure with a modern, high-capacity lift, Aspen Skiing Company aims to maintain the mountain's reputation as a premier ski destination.
