The Roaring Fork Valley is experiencing a flurry of changes in its business landscape, from beloved local closures to exciting new openings that bring fresh energy to Aspen, Carbondale, and El Jebel. Here’s a roundup of the latest developments shaping the valley’s community and economy.
Aspen is saying goodbye to a couple of familiar spots. Hai Si and Sway are both closing their doors, marking the end of an era for these popular establishments. Additionally, Gravity Haus and its Aspen location will shut down at the end of the summer, less than three years after opening. The decision affects the membership club, Unravel Coffee, and Boat Tow, all of which will close after August 31, though full membership access remains until then. The closure reflects a shift in the hospitality landscape, even as the building’s amenities like the lounge, dining room, ski lockers, fitness center, and co-working spaces served members since last December.
Carbondale is seeing an influx of new businesses aimed at fostering community and convenience:
GSD XFormers Pilates Studio officially opened on June 1 at 560 Highway 133, Suite 1. Co-owners Dale and Heidi Craig hope the studio will provide not only full-body workouts using the specialty XFormers machines but also a sense of community for local residents.
The Supply Collective, located at 655 Buggy Circle, offers a rotating menu of high-quality takeaway meals, including pastrami-braised short ribs, roasted sweet potatoes with lime yogurt, and a three-cheese mac with green chile, bacon, and chives. Owned by Mark Hardin of Field to Fork Kitchen, the eatery incorporates a minimal-waste philosophy, using surplus ingredients from catering operations to create fresh meals.
The valley’s nonprofit and service sectors are also growing:
English in Action, which supports immigrant communities in the region, celebrated the grand opening of its new 6,000-square-foot center in El Jebel this June. Funded through a $5.5 million campaign, the new facility expands the nonprofit’s space by more than three times, allowing for multiple simultaneous classes, volunteer training areas, private meeting rooms, and enhanced study facilities.
Coffee Connections (Coco’s) is bringing a drive-thru and walk-up cafe to the El Jebel Commercial Plaza. The 240-square-foot structure will include a restroom and plaza seating and will serve commuters and caffeine lovers from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., providing a convenient new option for grab-and-go coffee and snacks.
The Roaring Fork Valley is in a period of transition: Aspen sees closures of long-standing and newer hospitality spots, while Carbondale and El Jebel welcome community-focused openings. These changes reflect evolving needs in the valley, from luxury and lifestyle shifts in Aspen to health, wellness, and convenience in neighboring towns.
Whether residents are mourning favorites like Hai Si or exploring new venues like GSD XFormers or The Supply Collective, the Roaring Fork Valley continues to balance heritage, community, and innovation in its local business scene.
