The historic St. Benedict’s Monastery in Old Snowmass is back on the market, reopening opportunities for a unique and sprawling property in the Roaring Fork Valley. The announcement came in June, coinciding with a previously planned sale to an undisclosed buyer that ultimately fell through, the Aspen Daily News reports.
Originally listed nearly a year ago for $150 million, the monastery encompasses roughly 3,700 acres and offers a rare combination of natural beauty and privacy in Pitkin County. The property was listed by Ken and Haley Mirr of the Mirr Ranch Group in Denver, alongside Michael Latousek of Douglas Elliman Aspen.
The property initially went under contract on March 13, following months of marketing and negotiation. However, the buyer eventually terminated the contract, leaving the monastery available once again. Both the listing agents and the monastery’s superiors have remained tight-lipped about the details of the prior offer or prospective plans for the property’s future use.
The monastery is zoned RS-30 in Pitkin County, which could theoretically allow for over 100 dwelling units. However, converting the land to residential use would require a lengthy and complex land-use process, involving multiple approvals and compliance with strict county regulations. For now, the property remains a rare, intact tract of private land with its existing monastic structures and expansive natural surroundings.
With its relisting, St. Benedict’s Monastery represents a one-of-a-kind opportunity for buyers seeking privacy, history, and expansive acreage in the Roaring Fork Valley. Whether it continues as a contemplative retreat or becomes part of a long-term development vision, the property is poised to attract attention from those drawn to both its natural beauty and rare market status.
