The Best Places to Play Pickleball in Aspen, Snowmass, and the Roaring Fork Valley

Stephanie Kroll

In a valley renowned for its majestic peaks, extensive trails, and pristine waters, one of the trendiest activities is taking place on modest patches of asphalt. Pickleball, a sport that blends elements of table tennis, badminton, and tennis, has taken Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley by storm. Here’s a guide to the best places to play pickleball in the region, whether you’re a seasoned pro or just picking up a paddle for the first time.

Snowmass Village Recreation Center

The Snowmass Village Recreation Center is a prime destination for pickleball enthusiasts. It offers both indoor and outdoor courts, ensuring year-round play. During the winter, pickleball can be played indoors in the gymnasium. In the summer, the facility boasts eight outdoor courts available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Best of all, court usage is free.

Aspen Ice Garden

For the 2024 Spring/Summer season, indoor pickleball returns to the Aspen Ice Garden at 233 W Hyman Ave. With the ice out and lines in, players can enjoy pickleball on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. starting May 13th. There is a $5 per person charge for drop-in play.

Aspen Meadows Courts

Aspen Meadows Resort offers an excellent pickleball facility as part of the Cascades Tennis Center. While primarily known for its tennis courts, Aspen Meadows also caters to pickleball players with well-maintained courts and a picturesque setting. More information can be found here.

Iselin Pickleball Courts and Tennis Courts

Located near the Aspen Recreation Center, the Iselin courts are a popular spot for pickleball. The facility includes four pickleball courts that are open year-round from dawn until dusk, free of charge. The courts operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

Snowmass Recreation Courts

During the summer, the Snowmass Recreation Courts provide eight outdoor pickleball courts, allowing for plenty of playtime in the beautiful Colorado weather. More details are available on the Snowmass Recreation Center website.

Crawford Multiuse Courts in El Jebel

El Jebel's Crawford Multiuse Courts are another great option for pickleball players in the Roaring Fork Valley. These courts serve a variety of sports and provide a welcoming atmosphere for pickleball enthusiasts.

Young-Calaway Alpine Bank Pickleball Courts in Carbondale

Home to the 300-strong Roaring Fork Pickleball Association, the Young-Calaway Alpine Bank Pickleball Courts in Carbondale are a hub of activity. These new courts are designed to accommodate the growing number of pickleball players in the area.

Winter Indoor Options

For indoor pickleball during the winter months, Basalt Middle School, Snowmass Village Recreation Center, and Aspen Elementary offer great facilities. These venues ensure that players can continue enjoying the sport even when the weather turns cold.

Pickleball’s Rising Popularity

Pickleball’s surge in popularity is evident in Aspen and beyond. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, 4.8 million Americans played pickleball last year, marking a 39.3 percent increase over two years. The sport’s accessibility, low-cost equipment, and friendly atmosphere make it an appealing choice for people of all ages and skill levels.

Local celebrity and Olympic halfpipe skier Alex Ferreira is among the sport’s fans. “I immediately fell in love with the sport and have been playing ever since,” says Ferreira, who spends five days a week on local courts. The sport’s low barrier to entry and community feel are key to its appeal, notes Sam Louras, USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) ambassador for Aspen.

Pro Tip

Chris Wells, a highly sought-after pickleball coach in Aspen, offers this advice: “Aim for your opponent’s feet.” Wells, who coaches at the Snowmass Village Recreation Center each fall, says that the sport has helped her stay in top shape. “I’m in the best shape of my life, and I’m 60 years old,” she says.

With so many great places to play and a welcoming community of enthusiasts, pickleball in Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley is more than just a trend—it’s a beloved pastime. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, grab a paddle and join in the fun!
