Basalt Launches the Willits Housing and Community Space Project | Avant Garde Aspen Luxury Real Estate

Stephanie Kroll

The Town of Basalt is embarking on a transformative initiative to address two critical community needs: affordable housing and accessible community spaces. The Willits Housing and Community Space Project, located on the Sopris Meadows Parcel 2E, is poised to bring vibrant, inclusive development to a long-vacant 2.3-acre site near The Arts Campus at Willits (TACAW).

This project reflects goals outlined in the 2020 Basalt Master Plan, prioritizing housing solutions and creating spaces that serve a diverse range of residents and community activities.

Affordable Housing: A Commitment to Community

Basalt’s commitment to affordable housing is deeply rooted in the town’s vision for a sustainable and inclusive future.

  • History of the Site: The parcel, donated over 20 years ago by former landowner Michael Lipkin, was intended for public use.
  • Project Funding: The Basalt Forward 2030 ballot measure, passed with 72% voter approval, allocated $6 million of its $18 million budget to affordable housing initiatives.
  • Design Leadership: After a competitive selection process, Charles Cunniffe Architects and Design Workshopwere chosen to lead the planning and design efforts.

Community Space: A Hub for Connection

The project isn’t just about housing—it’s about creating spaces that bring people together. Based on feedback from residents and local partners, the town is considering several options for the community space:

  • Childcare Facility
  • Recreation Center
  • Flexible Event or Meeting Space

Public input will guide the ultimate purpose of the space, ensuring it meets the needs of the community.

Engaging the Community

The Town of Basalt is committed to an inclusive, transparent process, with multiple opportunities for public engagement:

  1. Online Participation: Visit Let’s Talk Basalt to learn more, take a survey, and provide input.
  2. In-Person Feedback: Attend an open house on December 6 during the Willits Tree Lighting event.
  3. Bilingual Accessibility: Spanish-language translation services will ensure that all voices are heard.

Project Details and Timeline

  • Initial Phase: The design contract includes $362,100 for public outreach, planning, and design services.
    • $200,000 funded by a Colorado Department of Local Affairs grant.
    • The remaining $162,100 covered by Basalt’s budget.
  • Engagement Windows: Two stages of public input will refine goals and designs before the land use application is submitted.
  • Construction Timeline: The project is expected to enter the sketching phase within the next six months, with further approvals to follow.

Why This Project Matters

The Willits Housing and Community Space Project is more than a construction plan—it’s a vision for a stronger, more connected Basalt.

  • Addressing Urgent Needs: Basalt’s housing market has left many residents struggling to find affordable options. This project aims to bridge that gap.
  • Promoting Accessibility: The site’s proximity to public transit and high-demand WE-cycle hubs makes it an ideal location for transit-connected housing.
  • Fostering Inclusivity: By prioritizing public input and ensuring resources are accessible to all demographics, Basalt is building a community for everyone.
